Walking is a popular option for sightseeing, window-shopping, and experiencing the flavor of New York City. Taxis are relatively easy to hail, except during rush hour or inclement weather. Visitors should use yellow cabs only. The cab is available only if the center panel of its roof sign is lit. Subways and buses are efficient and inexpensive (less than $5). MetroCards for subways and buses can be purchased in subway stations and from designated merchants. The most convenient subway access is at Grand Central Terminal, four short blocks away from The Alex. Because of expensive and limited parking, as well as challenging traffic conditions, rental cars are generally not recommended.
